Redemption in Dogtown: Cyberpunk 2077 - Phantom Liberty Review
When Cyberpunk 2077 initially launched in 2020, its technical tribulations overshadowed Night City's brilliant foundations. Fast forward to the release of Phantom Liberty and the monumental 2.0 update: CD Projekt RED has executed one of the most stunning redemptive arcs in gaming history.
Welcome to Dogtown
Dogtown is a walled-off, lawless enclave carved out of Pacifica, governed by the militaristic warlord Kurt Hansen. Visually and architecturally, Dogtown is denser, grimier, and more vertically stacked than the main districts of Night City. Flashing neon casino towers rise above derelict stadium markets and decaying luxury penthouses.
The narrative drops V into a high-stakes spy thriller. After Space Force One is downed over Dogtown, you are enlisted by FIA sleeper agent Solomon Reed (played with world-weary charisma by Idris Elba) and the elusive netrunner Songbird (So Mi) in exchange for a promised cure to the Relic ticking inside your brain.

Figure: V and Solomon Reed navigating the lethal shadows of Dogtown.
Overhauled Mechanics: Cyberpunk 2.0
Coupled with the expansion, the free 2.0 update revitalized the core systems:
- Perk Trees Reimagined: Synergies like bullet-deflecting katanas, mid-air dashes, and netrunner overclock modes make gunplay feel blistering and fluid.
- Cyberware System: Armor is now tied to internal cyberware rather than clothing items, accompanied by a cyberware capacity limiter that flirts with Cyberpsychosis.
- Vehicle Combat: Engage in high-speed shootouts and dispatch enemies using mounted machine guns and rocket pods.
The expansion culminates in devastating narrative crossroads that leave no clean, happy resolutionsโstaying true to the foundational ethos of Mike Pondsmith's dark cyberpunk universe.
